I spent the first 40 years of my life wearing the badge of honor that I did it on my own. Every success that I had was because I went after it. I worked for it. I did the work.

I.

I didn’t need anyone taking credit for my work. It took me 40 really long years to realize that the people that I could have credited for helping me along the way weren’t credit hounds, they were key players in the story that is becoming my life and had I been willing to acknowledge that what made me was more than me, it is possible that I would have received MORE and moved faster.

The art of “becoming” is a lifelong journey, and along the way we reach milestones. I became a highschool graduate, I became an exchange student, I became an english teach in Europe, I became a lawyer. I became a husband, a father, a coach.

I became a highschool graduate thanks to a mother who shepherded us through childhood and a very special couple who showed me a bigger world and later a college grad because Mama Jean anonymously paid for my college. I became an exchange student because my father encouraged it and my grandfather cut me a check. I became an english teacher in brussels because I met Brenda Sanders through an internship in DC and she said it would be perfect for me. I became a lawyer because everyone encouraged it. I became a husband because Lynn knew that my wife lived in North Carolina and I have stayed a husband because that wife inspires me to become a better man every day. I became a father because God knew I needed those girls, and I became a coach because many, many people told me not to waste my talents and experience.

And I was able to recognize this because my therapist Jason told me the most amazing thing: We are commanded to bear one another’s burdens, not bear everyone else’s while not sharing ours.

The point of all of this, and of life, is that we were not designed to go it alone. We were not created to live separate and apart. You CAN become all alone, but why not share the becoming and the beauty of life as we were designed?
