Crisis Proof Your Life - The Rest
The following is part of a six-part series designed to give you the tools you need to protect your life and assets while running a business (and hopefully living an epic life!) I was going to break it into six full weeks of content, spoon feeding you along the way, but we are all adults and I was getting bored with the series. If I, the mastermind, was getting bored….were you?
Business Interruption Protocol
Things happen. Fires. Earthquakes. Riots. Taylor Swift Concerts. Things happen, and sometimes those things lead to the need to shut down our business for a while.
Your crisis plan should have procedures in place that you review regularly with your team. A phone tree (or some way to communicate with your staff if you have to suddenly close), savings to cover the closure, employee wellness resources, and most importantly: a plan that you have considered ahead of time that will guide you reopening.
Crisis Communications Plan
Things Happen. Rogue Yelp Reviews. a bad experience posted on TicTok, a Taylor Swift Concert. Things happen that, if you are not prepared, can spin wildly out of control. When you are deep in a crisis and getting those calls, you need to know who says what. The best and most successful plan start with prevention: give every staff member the authority to “make it right” for every customer. That will prevent most crises. Occasionally though, you just cannot make everyone happy. Practice and plan ahead of time. Nobody does their best on the fly.
Succession Plan
Things Happen. Logan Roy suddenly dies (Succession reference), you have a breakdown because you haven’t had a break. Taylor Swift schedules a concert. Succession planning isn’t just what happens when the emperor passes. It also means planning for your absence and eventual handing over of the reigns. How are you grooming the next generation of leaders in your business? How are you documenting your procedures to better onboard your children? And do you have a will in place so your heirs aren’t left guessing how you want your business assets transferred?
Crisis Proofing your business starts with you acknowledging that you cannot control everything, but you can prepare for it. By completing the components of our checklist, you can with prevent many crises from happening or recover from them faster, continue growing your business, and live an epic life.
What Are You Chasing?
This week we are in Juno Beach Florida. My youngest is in a summer camp at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center learning more about her passion: Sea Turtles. Why did we need to come all the way to southern Florida in August for summer camp? Because we wanted to and it’s a great program.
That gives the rest of us plenty of free time during the day to get some work done and explore. My oldest and I went to The Henry Morrison Flagler Museum on Tuesday for a tour of this Industrial Revolution mega-mansion. Throughout the tour, we learned all about Mr. Flagler and his efforts to create what we all know now as southern Florida.
It was a massive house, covered in all sorts of marble and precious metals. It has survived its fair share of hurricanes. All I could think of as Emmie was in awe of the size and grandeur was how miserable I would be in that place. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t say no to the amount of money needed to build it, but I do not think I would like that much space in one place, and definitely not something that would place such a burden on my family after I pass. |
I would rather go for epic memories…like sea turtle camp in southern Florida or 5-star dining for the 14th birthday at the highest-rated restaurant in the state.
So what are you chasing?
